Factors That Affect Your Car Insurance Rates
Auto rates can feel random, but they're not — carriers price on a fairly predictable set of factors. Here's what's actually moving your number, and what you can do about it.
Factors you can't change much
- Your vehicle — make, model, year, repair cost, theft rates, safety ratings.
- Where you live — local accident frequency, theft, weather, even your ZIP.
- Age and driving experience.
Factors you can influence
- Driving record — tickets and at-fault accidents are the big movers; they age off over time.
- Coverage and deductibles — raising a deductible lowers premium (just keep it affordable if you have to claim).
- Bundling — home + auto together usually drops both.
- Mileage / usage — fewer miles can mean lower rates.
- Credit-based insurance score (where allowed).
The factor people forget
Which carrier you're with. Every company weighs these differently — the exact same driver can pay very different prices across carriers. That's the whole advantage of an independent agent: we shop the market instead of quoting one company.
If your rate jumped without a claim, it's often just the carrier's overall pricing — worth letting us re-shop it.
