Does My Auto Insurance Cover a Rental Car?
Standing at the rental counter getting pressured to buy their coverage? Before you say yes, here's how your own policy actually works with rentals.
The general rule
Your personal auto policy usually extends to a rental car — the same liability, collision, and comprehensive you carry on your own vehicle typically follows you into a rental for personal use. So if you carry collision, your rental is generally covered for collision (minus your deductible).
The important "buts"
- Only what you already carry. If you dropped collision/comprehensive on your own car, you don't have it on the rental either.
- Personal use only. Renting for business travel is often excluded — check before you assume.
- Loss of use & fees. Rental companies may charge you for the days the damaged car is out of service ("loss of use") and admin fees that a personal policy may not fully cover — this is where the counter coverage (CDW/LDW) can have a place.
- Renting abroad? Personal U.S. policies usually don't cover international rentals.
The credit-card myth
Many credit cards offer rental coverage — but it's almost always secondary (kicks in after your own insurance) and has exclusions. Don't assume it replaces a real policy.
Bottom line
For a normal personal trip with full coverage on your own car, you're often fine to decline most counter add-ons — but it's worth a 2-minute check first. Not sure what your policy carries? That's what we're here for.
