At the scene (if it's a car accident)

1. Get safe

Move out of traffic if you can, turn on hazards, check on everyone. Call 911 if anyone's injured.

2. Document it

Photos of all vehicles, damage, the scene, and any injuries. Get the other driver's name, phone, insurance company + policy number, and plate. Note the location and time.

3. Get the police report

For anything beyond a minor fender-bender, file a report and get the report number.

4. Don't admit fault

Exchange info and stay factual — let the adjusters determine fault.
